Breaking From Mindless Scrolling

Breaking from mindless scrolling with reading

Reclaiming Your Presence

I recently rediscovered something quietly magical: reading a paper book. And not just any book – The Alchemist – ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS available out there. Turning through each page, I felt like I was remembering a part of myself I hadn’t visited in a while. No checking for notifications every 5 minutes, just presence, depth, and imagination.

That’s when I realized that I wasn’t just reading, I was reclaiming. Reclaiming my attention, my stillness, my power and that in itself is a massive win for me.

For a while now, I found myself slipping into unconscious scrolling – hi there, TikTok. You know the feeling, grabbing your phone for “just a minute,” only to realize 3 hours (YEP!) have passed and your energy is drained, your spirit agitated. But with each chapter I read, I felt a deeper part of me calming down. I wasn’t reaching for my phone as much. I didn’t need to. Recovering from a cold/cough might have also played a part where scrolling felt like a burden.

That’s the power of presence. That’s the medicine of being “offline.”

Why Paper Books Work Like a Reset

I’m finding that there’s something grounding about holding a real book. The body slows down, the breath steadies (depending on the book). The tactile experience, the turning of pages, even the scent of the paper, it engages your senses in a deeply mindful way.

Unlike phones or tablets, books don’t ping, notify, or distract. They invite you into a singular, focused experience. This is rarity in today’s hyper-connected world, and that’s why it’s so healing.

5 Simple Steps to Break Free from Mindless Scrolling

1. Start with One Intentional Read
Pick one book that speaks to your soul. Let it call you. Set an intention to pick up your book for just 10 minutes a day.

2. Create a Phone-Free Zone
Choose a space in your home, your bed, a cozy corner, your bathtub and make it a sacred no-device space. Fill it with books, journals, tea… whatever invites presence.

3. Replace Scrolling with Reading
Next time you catch yourself scrolling out of habit, pause. Close the app. Reach for your book instead. Even if it’s just a page or two, it’s a win.

4. Carry a Book Everywhere
Waiting in line? On the train? At a café? Those tiny pockets of time are perfect for a paragraph or a page. You’d be surprised how much reading you can fit in.

5. Track the Shift
Journal how you feel – reading vs. after scrolling. Notice the difference in your energy, your mood, and your presence. This awareness will motivate you to keep going.

It’s About More Than Reading… It’s About Returning to Yourself

When we put our phones down and pick up a book, we’re doing more than changing a habit, we’re reconnecting to the parts of us that thrive in stillness. We’re remembering how to listen, how to imagine, how to be.

And that’s what this season of life is calling us into: less noise, more presence. Less reaction, more reflection. Less escape, more embodiment.

Final Thoughts
